Let me confess: I've had a long love affair with High Country News, and I'm eager to share my passion with you.
It all started in 1987, when I discovered the High Country News intern program and moved to rural Paonia for an environmental journalism "boot-camp." Two decades later, I continue to give to HCN, both as a volunteer board member, and as a donor, because frankly, it fills and irreplaceable role in my life, providing me with stories and perspectives I rarely find in the mainstream media.
The High Country News internship not only got me started in journalism, but it opened my eyes and ears to the power of reporting and photography. Most importantly, the rigors of HCN's boot camp essentially taught me how to write. An HCN internship is one of the greatest ways for new or old journalists to not only hone their reporting skills, but to objectively cover natural resource issues in all of their complexities.
