In the maiden issue of Great Basin News, editor and publisher Jon Christensen lays out the mission: “We believe the time is right to bring the Great Basin together to understand itself, to relish its own iconoclastic visions, to ponder its own quirky fate. You might consider this a test of that idea.” Christensen, who worked for several years as a regional editor for High Country News out of his home in Carson City, Nev., starts the test with a series of articles on Nevada’s latest range war. His stories are hopeful, given the violence and acrimony surrounding land management in the state. But Christensen says his 12-page quarterly will not always feature good news. Future issues will include articles on nuclear waste and the difficult choices facing the region’s urban areas. The newsletter will also include a smattering of essays and poetry.
