Close to Home: Photographs
Richard S. Buswell,
80 pages, hardcover:
University of New Mexico Press, 2013.

Montana photographer Richard Buswell has documented the state's landscapes for more than four decades. In the book Close to Home, he narrows his focus, providing an unsentimental look at objects discarded from pioneer life. Many of the images are abstractions: closeups of the patterns in a coyote skull, the tines of a pitchfork, the parallel lines of leather fringe on chaps. The black-and-white images provide entry into "the quiet, sober reality of truly abandoned mills, mines, ranches and homes, places that were probably no more than marginally successful in their heyday and that today are isolated from the currents of everyday life."
