Welcome, new HCN employees

  • Jon Christensen

In August, Mike Maxwell became our new Web and IT manager. Mike maintains the HCN Web site, analyzes web traffic data, and advises the managers on online marketing strategy. Mike, who has a B.A. in political science from the University of Colorado at Denver, has been in Paonia for three years now with his partner, Thea Deley. Originally from Fort Collins, Colo., he's also lived in New Mexico and California, where he worked at an Internet start-up company. In his spare time, Mike enjoys really good wine, making Mexican food and pretending that he is an actual fly fisherman.

Ellen Kraus joined the HCN circulation team in May. A Midwesterner by birth, she's been in Colorado since earning her communications degree from Western Illinois University in 1982. She earned a teaching certificate at the University of Colorado-Boulder and worked a variety of jobs before ending up in Paonia, where she's been for the past 16 years with her husband, Don and, daughter Kailey. Ellen has "only four" addictions: chocolate, red wine, international travel and the reality show The Amazing Race.

Congratulations, Jon and chip
Former HCN editor Jon Christensen has just landed a new job: executive director of the Bill Lane Center for the American West at Stanford University. The Lane Center, founded in 2005, plows the fertile ground where academic scholarship and journalism meet. It is already the home of the Risser Prize for Environmental Journalism, and now, it will, in Jon's words, bring "a journalistic metabolism" to Western scholarship. The center is co-sponsoring a public forum Oct. 14 in Sacramento that will address the busted economics of California government -- "Getting To Reform: Avenues to Constitutional Change in California." For more information, see west.stanford.edu.

Former HCN intern Chip Giller (fall 1994) is one of 10 recipients of the 2009 Heinz Awards, which honor the late Sen. John Heinz, R-Pa. The $100,000 awards are for "individuals whose achievements have helped bring about a cleaner, greener and more sustainable planet." Chip was recognized for founding Grist.org, an "innovative media platform" that serves up environmental news and commentary with wry humor. Nice work, Chip!

Corrections/Clarifications

The description of our national parks as "America's best idea" originally came from James Bryce, the British ambassador to the U.S. in 1912, not from Wallace Stegner -- a misunderstanding from promotional material for the PBS-TV series The National Parks: America's Best Idea (HCN, 9/14 & 9/28).

Gary Nabhan's op-ed "What we've got here is a failure to collaborate" stated that Sen. Dianne Feinstein proposed that the Drakes Bay Oyster Company be allowed to operate in Point Reyes National Seashore through at least 2015 (HCN, 8/3/09). Feinstein actually proposed an extension to 2022. Also, the company is located not in Drakes Bay proper, but in Drakes Estero, an estuary of the bay located within the Seashore.

Ari Levaux's op-ed " ‘Organic' goes down a slippery slope" stated that Silk has "dropped its commitment to domestic soy" (HCN, 8/3/09). Although Silk did buy Chinese soybeans for some years, since 2006 Silk has been getting its soy from North America.
