Change in the Air

Last month, we bid farewell to Laura Paskus, who has been HCN’s assistant editor for three years. But this isn’t really goodbye: Laura has moved to Albuquerque, N.M., where she will work part-time as our Southwest editor.

The move is part of an ongoing effort to put HCN on the ground around our million-square-mile region. Ray Ring, our Northern Rockies editor, has covered Idaho, Montana and Wyoming from his office in Bozeman, Mont., since 2001. Now, Laura will keep an eye on New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado, from Albuquerque.

Send Laura story ideas at [email protected] Her new address is P.O. Box 70582, Albuquerque, NM 87197, and her phone number is 505-217-5136. We’re looking for a new associate editor to fill Laura’s shoes here at our western Colorado headquarters. For details, see the advertisement (in our Classifieds).

Production assistant JoAnn Kalenak has moved, too, but only across the office. JoAnn is now our marketing and sales coordinator, and is working to get High Country News’ name and stories in front of as many people as possible. One sign of her recent success: Three newspapers in Utah printed our recent cover story, "The Gangs of Zion" (HCN, 8/8/05: The Gangs of Zion). Readers of the Provo Daily Herald and the Logan Herald Journal had such varied and moving responses to the story that we’ve dedicated the entire letters page of this issue to them.

Taking JoAnn’s place as designer/production assistant is Kerri Brown. Kerri graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City with a degree in graphic design in 2003, and has been designing advertisements for various newspapers since. She came to Colorado from upstate New York at the end of February. She says she misses the trees of her native New England, but loves the views of Colorado’s high peaks.

Visitors

Peter Todebush of Hayward, Calif., came by on his way to a family reunion in Missouri. Lavinia and John Ycas, longtime subscribers from Boulder, Colo., also visited. Mike Evans of Saratoga, Wyo., stopped to see us en route to a birthday party in Egnar, which is somewhere southwest of Paonia on the Colorado-Utah border. From Fort Collins, Colo., Dave Swartz and Susi Milcan, and daughters Lukas and Lydia, dropped in on their return from the Rio Chama. Anne Egger, a geologist from the San Francisco Bay area, said hello on her way to Mesa Verde National Park.

Santa Fe, Here We Come

We’d like to invite readers in the Santa Fe, N.M., area to a potluck dinner following our fall board meeting. Come meet fellow HCN readers and the HCN staff and board, and help us celebrate our 35th anniversary.

The potluck starts at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center, 3221 Rodeo Road, Santa Fe. Please bring a dish to share; drinks will be provided. RSVP by calling development associate Jason Nicholoff at 970-527-4898 or e-mailing [email protected].

Correction

We misspelled David Propst’s last name in a story about the Middle Rio Grande (HCN, 8/8/05: Domenici clobbers cooperation on the Rio Grande). Sorry, David.
