Know the West

Drop the stereotypes

I had to comment on Lisa Jones’ article "My Sensitive Man meets culture shock on the range" (HCN, 10/27/03: My Sensitive Man meets culture shock on the range). My immediate reaction when I read the article was to laugh. After I thought about the article, however, I realized that Ms. Jones’ rantings were exactly the thing that creates one of the greatest divides in this country: stereotypes.

If we ever want "redneck ranchers," "tree-hugging environmentalists," "money-grubbing politicians" and other "groups" that hold the future of the West in their hands, to sit down at the same table on a more regular basis, we had all better start treating each other as individuals and not as stereotypes.
