Glen Canyon Action Network, an advocacy group that
wants to drain Lake Powell, will hold its Restoration Celebration
and Rendezvous at Glen Canyon Dam on March 14. The event, which
coincides with the International Day of Action Against Dams and the
anniversary of author Edward Abbey’s death, “will be a celebration,
not a protest,” says field director David Orr. “The rally is
designed to propel us on a progressively snowballing campaign to
demonstrate support for draining Lake Powell.” Featured speaker
will be Earth Island Institute President David Brower;
author/musician Katie Lee – who once vowed never to see the dam –
will sing. Other highlights include storytelling by river guide and
lifetime dam opponent Ken Sleight, and circulation and signing of a
Glen Canyon declaration. The group says pulling the plug won’t mean
the demise of tourist-dependent Page, Ariz. Instead, activists
hope, the dam site will be reincarnated as an international center
for the study of river restoration.
