ATV revolt
A proposal to close 400 miles of forest roads and 200 miles of trails to motorized vehicles on the Targhee National Forest has raised a storm of protest. The road closures are intended to decrease road densities in a grizzly bear recovery area - a move recommended by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service - but all-terrain vehicle advocates say they're being discriminated against.
The proposal is included in the draft environmental impact statement for the Targhee National Forest Open Road and Open Motorized Trail Analysis, and its comment period closes Feb. 1. The EIS is available on the Web at www.fs.fed.us/tnf/ and comments can be sent to Jerry B. Reese, Forest Supervisor, P.O. Box 208, St. Anthony, ID 83445 (208/624-3151), or e-mailed to pcomments/r4\[email protected]
