Glacier takes a stand

A draft plan for managing Glacier National Park in Montana for the next 20 years would avoid problems plaguing other national parks by proposing bold moves: banning personal watercraft use and barring commercial air tours. The proposal would also protect historic lodges, gradually improve Going-to-the-Sun Road, increase services for visitors during the winter season, and build a new interpretive center at the west entrance.

For a copy of the Draft General Management Plan/EIS or to comment by Nov. 30, visit or write to Superintendent, DGMP/EIS Project, Glacier National Park, West Glacier, MT 59936. Public hearings are scheduled for Kalispell and Great Falls, Oct. 19; West Glacier and Bozeman, Oct. 20; Browning and Helena, Oct. 21; and Missoula, Oct. 22. For the exact times and locations of these meetings call 406/888-7911 or check their Web site.
