On the road
Hitting the road could be one way to protect roadless
lands. Starting Oct. 9, the Montana-based Native Forest Network is
on a road trip to communities in the Northern Rockies to call
attention to 10 threatened roadless areas. Among them are the
Gallatin Range and Rocky Mountain Front in northern Montana, the
headwaters of the St. Joe River in Idaho and the Kettle Range in
Washington, among others. The organization will provide a forum for
community speakers and local musicians, and present slide shows and
poetry readings at each stop on the tour. Phil Knight, coordinator
of the group's Yellowstone branch, hopes the visits will inspire
people to defend their wild places. The group might visit the
Southern Rockies, he adds, if local residents show
interest.
