Cleopatra's Needle

Cleopatra's Needle

At the foot of the Lukachukai Mountain range on the Arizona/New Mexico border and in the Navajo Nation stand some very impressive sandstone monoliths. Pictured here is Cleopatra's Needle, which is 275 ft tall. I was able to get permission to gain access to this impressive pinnacle for an overnight stay.. I timed it so a just risen crescent moon would provide some natural light without diminishing the stars. Where the name of this monolith and it's companion spire called Venus's Needle came from is anybody's guess, but that is the name on the map.
