Harrier Hawk at Harvest

Harrier Hawk at Harvest

A Northern Harrier Hawk patrols the grain field on my family's farm in Winthrop, Washington. The late-summer sun illuminates the weighted seedheads of Emer, an ancient grain variety that is ready for harvesting. In the understory beneath, I hear field mice and vols scurrying about, gathering food for the winter. Surely they're wary of this predator soaring overhead. The bird of prey, the ancient grains, the shadow of the Cascade Mountains represent the intricate balance of nature and agriculture.
