The Horizon Was Always Our Destination

The Horizon Was Always Our Destination

Running ridges, Toiyabe Range, central Nevada. In high school, my brother and I and a few friends decided to start trekking across our home state of Nevada, some 350+ miles. We planned a route that avoided roads and trails, which was actually quite easy to do in this vast but rarely trammeled state. In 4 trips over 12 years, we hiked our own transect across the state, crossing only a handful of fences and essentially no private land. We started ‘the trail’ in our backyard as kids and hiked through the high west and young adulthood into things unknown.
