Cedar waxwing on red-hot poker

Cedar waxwing on red-hot poker

A cedar waxwing perches on red-hot pokers (Kniphofia spp.) in a neighbor's yard in Depoe Bay, Oregon. These peachy, black-masked birds often travel in flocks and feed on nectar, fruit and insects. The Kniphofia are native to Africa but have become naturalized in many areas around the world. They're quite popular are ornamental plants in coastal Oregon, where their spikes of flame-colored flowered attract a variety of birds and insects.
