Betting their lives

The warm, shallow pools and streams that adult Yosemite toads (Anaxyrus canorus) select for nurseries sometimes leave tadpoles dry weeks too early. Above, high in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, adult and juvenile Yosemite toads rest in a drying pool while tadpoles struggle to survive after a short snow season in 2012.
