A message from author Craig Childs, an explorer of the West's many landscapes and communities:

Craig Childs

The West is not New York or Washington, D.C., and it requires dispatches from the inside. News here is generated by a distinct landscape, culture and compendium of issues. Getting the story depends on tireless reportage by writers and photographers who are not strangers to their subject, but who live in the thick of it. High Country News does this job — and does it well — with passion, insight and integrity. It is not a high-budget operation. While working on stories I have at times slept on the side of the road — rather than taking a room — in order to save money. Despite the low overhead, a powerful and necessary product is created. Walk into the High Country News offices, and you immediately sense that this is a publication of eagerness and spirit. These are good people doing good work, willing to question themselves, ready to take on new ideas, and always feeling the pulse of this land. They are the ones you want delivering the story.

Please support the good work they do on behalf of the West.

Donate Now!

Your donation supports the independent journalists who keep you informed about the West's changing landscapes and communites.

As you might imagine, the costs are not small to produce a biweekly newsmagazine and Web site that provide well-researched, well-written, ground-breaking journalism for and about the West. In fact, we need your help to keep doing it.

More ways to give:

Your tax-deductible gift to the Research Fund helps High Country News continue making a difference in the West and beyond. Contributions directly support the work of our editorial and production staff, as well as our freelance reporters and photographers.

Subscription revenue provides only 37 percent of the income needed to bring you the news of the West, and we don’t fill our pages with advertisements from corporate giants to make up the 63 percent difference. We instead rely on the generosity of you, our reader. Your support allows HCN to maintain its feisty independence, unlike mainstream media beholden to corporate interests.
