Tom Bell, the straight-talking founder of High Country News, turns 90 on April 12. At a time when there was little coverage of environmental issues in the American West, Bell founded HCN in 1970.
HIGH COUNTY NEWS WRITERS WIN TOP OF THE ROCKIES AWARDS
The Society of Professional Journalists' Colorado chapter awarded four High Country News writers with Top of the Rockies awards on April 25. High Country News writers received four first place awards and one third place award for work in the news outlet's print magazine and website.
TREE CORONERS STORY WINS IMPORTANT AWARD
The Society of Environmental Journalists awarded High Country News contributing editor Cally Carswell second place in their 2014 Awards for Reporting on the Environment in the Kevin Carmody Award for Outstanding In-depth Reporting. Carswell’s story, “The Tree Coroners,” is about the dedicated scientists who are working to understand just how and why trees die in order to save the West's threatened forests.
