It's time to get real

The San Luis Valley is a wonderful place that needs to be preserved ("Farming on the Fringe," HCN, 2/18/13). The water issues will only get worse as the climate goes into this hotter drier spell -- one that could last thousands of years. I'm glad the local people are working on a solution to their water shortages, even though not all are satisfied. Local solutions are needed everywhere as we figure out how we will work within the limits of resources we now know are finite.

I'm thankful the earlier water grabs failed. I lived in Colorado then and followed the issues in the Denver papers. Imagine how much worse it would be if they had shipped large volumes of water out of the San Luis Valley.
