She had been an artist, and was selected to do a portrait of President Ronald Reagan, which she delivered to Reagan in the White House in 1987. "Eventually, she just crossed the line. I didn't recognize the signs, didn't expect it," TJ says. He was home in Idaho on leave from the Air Force when it happened; she shot herself the day before he was to go back to work.
