Coal mining has played a major role in the histories of most Western states, including Colorado. Slaughter in Serene tells the story of striking miners in the late 1920s, desperate for fair pay and more humane working conditions in Colorado’s coal mines. Six were murdered by state police at the Columbine Mine, near the now-vanished hamlet of Serene, north of Denver. First-person reminiscences from survivors make the story vivid.
