Going underground can be beautiful

Dear HCN,

I was delighted to read, in "Wildlife crossings cut down on roadkill" (HCN, 11/23/98), that people are beginning to talk about wildlife bridges and underground highways. Just my cup of tea.

But the Alberta overpass in your photo is ugly enough to set the movement back 10 years, though at least it is a start. I hope before long we may see structures that express a love of nature rather than engineering technology.

Malcolm Wells

Brewster, Massachusetts

Malcolm Wells has written 10 books about underground houses; his first, Underground Designs, was published in 1977 but remains in print. It has sold over 90,000 copies. "Mac" tells us that How to Build an Underground House, published in 1991, shows how a 1,200 square-foot earth-covered solar house can be built on either a flat or sloping site, and includes "suggestions for expanding the building, staying out of trouble, things I've learned."
