Everywhere humans live, they come together in some form of community -- to reach common goals, to help and support each other, to get daily work done. Despite the Western US's long tradition of rugged individualism, it's always been a land of community. Living in far-flung, rural outposts, early settlers worked together for their very survival; that kind of collaboration is no less essential today, even as the population becomes more and more urban. Today, our communities reach beyond those on our block and in our town, as social media and the global market put us in touch with people we never would have met even twenty years ago. We no longer have barn-raisings and quilting bees, but we still come together in other ways to trade tools and stories, to share our knowledge and lend a hand.
This special issue will explore the idea of community  -- what it means, how we create it, how it helps us survive.

This issue is HCN's yearly opportunity to showcase some of the best new literature and most exciting authors in the American West.
